OVERVIEW

The pelicans of Mykonos are the most famous animals of the island. You can meet them in the alleys or near the old port and get photographed with them, as being done years now by the visitors.

The relationship of Mykonos with these wonderful birds started by Peter the pelican. In 1958 a Mykonian fisherman found in the sea a wounded pelican which he brought to the island. A local habitant, known for his animal feelings, treated the bird. The pelican, after its recovery, remained on the island and became inseparable with the person who took care of him. Their relationship and their presence on the island began to draw the attention of residents and tourists. The pelican got named Petros in the honor, as it is said, of a heroic fisherman.

Since then Peter then becomes the mascot of Mykonos. Photos of him in the whitewashed alleys of Chora among tourists went all around the world and its reputation grew rapidly. The island obtained one more trademark, Peter the pelican. Peter was seriously injured in late 1985 by a vehicle and died. The very fact wagered the Mykonians, who had really loved the bird.

Since then 3 pelicans came to the island. The pelicans are very dear and maintain the reputation of the first pelican. Even though everyone has a different name, the people who know the story, call them by the name ... Peter.
