The average annual rainfall in Mykonos is 350 mm. This fact coupled with the lack of groundwater resources - since most of the subsoil consists of granite - necessitated the construction of dams (reservoirs), desalination plants and boreholes to meet the needs for water supply and irrigation especially in the summer.
The dam Marathi (fennel) is located northwest of the island, about 4 km from the main town Chora at the homonymous torrent Marathia. Before the dam was constructed, the torrent would result in Panormos bay creating a wetland known as "Panormos Lagoon". The dam was constructed in the decade of the 90’s (completed in 1992 and operated in 2000). Because of the large tourism development, the use of the reservoir is exclusively for potable water. The cost of the construction was approximately 3,500,000 euros.
The technical features of the dam are:
• Maximum height of 25 feet
• Length of crest 265 meters
• Width 4.5 meters coronation
• Elevation of crest 34 feet
• Effective volume of approximately 3,000,000 cubic meters
• Reservoir Area: 500,000 sq.m.
The dam has developed a remarkable wetland with significant growth of flora and fauna. It has become a station for endangered migratory birds.
