Ano Mera Maou Dam

< BACK

OVERVIEW

The average annual rainfall in Mykonos is 350 mm. This fact coupled with the lack of groundwater resources - since most of the subsoil consists of granite - necessitated the construction of dams (reservoirs), desalination plants and boreholes to meet the needs for water supply and irrigation especially in the summer.

The dam Maou or Ano Mera is located northeast of the island, about 10 km from the main town Chora at the homonymous torrent Maou Lagada and about 600 meters from the sea. The dam was constructed in the decade of the 90’s and was completed in 1997. Before the construction of the dam, the torrent resulted at Fokos beach. The cost of the construction was approximately 3,300,000 euros.

The technical features of the dam are:

• Length of crest 170 meters

• Width 4.5 meters coronation

• Elevation of crest 31 feet

• Effective volume of approximately 1,000,000 cubic meters

• Reservoir Area: 150,000 sq.m.

The dam has developed a remarkable wetland with significant growth of flora and fauna such as the presence of terrapins (water turtles). It has become a station for endangered migratory birds.
