Delos

OVERVIEW

The island of Delos is located in the west of Mykonos and has 14 inhabitants (2001 census), which is essentially the staff of the site. The island has a small port which anchor the boats that carry visitors from Mykonos.

 

According to mythology, at the sacred place of Delos Apollo and Artemis where born. According to the legend, the floating island of Delos was immobilized by Poseidon to offer refuge to Leto who got pregnant by Zeus, something that had angered Hera.

 

During the Classical period and after the Persian Wars (478 BC) the Delian League was founded (an alliance of city states of Greece), with the most important city-state Athens.

 

Since 1990 Delos is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and with the island of Rinia are protected by the Ministry of Culture.

 

ACCESS

There are trips to Delos every day of the week except Monday, because the site is closed, and weather willing, since during winter and summer with the winds, the routes sometimes get canceled.

 

Departures are made from the old port of Chora opposite the church of Agios Nicholaos.
