Mykonos is arguably the most cosmopolitan island in Greece. It is located in the center of the Aegean Sea and on the south is the island of Naxos, Syros at the west and northwest is Tinos. The island has 9,320 inhabitants (census 2001) and the capital of the island is Chora (town of Mykonos) located in the western side. It is one of the Cycladic islands and is a municipality, together with the two smaller uninhabited islands of Delos and Renia. Administratively it belongs to Syros (Cyclades capital) and the churches belongs to the Bishopric of Syros-Tinos-Andros.


It can be accessed via air and boat lines. The island is connected by air with Athens, Thessaloniki and many island and continental airports in Greece. Additionally many charters arrive to the island from various cities, mostly European. There is a connection with Piraeus port and other islands. Many tourists also arrive with cruise ships, since Mykonos is one of the most famous Greek destinations.


The island has a very good and regular bus service. The buses, with frequent service and affordable ticket will take you to the most famous places. Additionally you can be served individually by taxis. On the island operates a health center, banks and public services.


The climate is Mediterranean with an average temperature during the summer at 25 degrees Celsius. It is characterized by sunshine and strong winds. Its position in the Aegean Sea favors the development of strong winds that reach even 8 to 9 Beaufort. The presence of these winds make summer cooler (especially the months of July and August) as the island is bare of vegetation.


The residents, for the most part, deal with tourism though alive yet still remain the utilization of land and the engagement in farming that have created very famous and remarkable local products like kopanisti, xinotiro, Louza, sausages and marzipans. Furthermore it is worth mentioning the weavings of Mykonos which are an important part of the folklore of the island and are selected fanatically.


Mykonos is consistently one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Visitors, among them prominent figures from around the world have turned from the '50s until today, in a modern tourist resort that has not lost anything from its traditional Cycladic physiognomy.
